![]() Then, later in the movie seeing the Belgian peacekeepers pull out elicited a strange sense of irony and humor as they try to escape the situation that they themselves created.Īt the beginning of the movie, the dramatic irony of seeing the early stages of the genocide happen to the obliviousness of Paul. He gave up so much whether it was his blood, money, or sanity – all to protect his loved ones, and even complete strangers who had the misfortune to be born under a fictitious label made by the colonial power of Belgium. The movie was touching and I worried with the protagonist over whether he will survive, or his wife, kids, family, friends, refugees. ![]() Paul’s attempt to save the Tutsis reflect what I read about the sympathetic Hutus, which Paul was an example of. ![]() I was able to see the uselessness of the UN and the brutality of the Hutu militia. Watching the Tutus get killed on screen shines a light on the genocide more than can be gained by simply reading about it in A Problem From Hell. I really felt Paul’s struggles as he tried to save refugees and his anger as the UN pulled out of Rwanda. Hotel Rwanda provided insights into the horrors of the Rwandan genocide: the brutality, the desperation, the helplessness. ![]()
